Mercedes-Benz celebrates double top in contract hire industry’s van reliability survey

Mercedes-Benz has yet again dominated the van reliability survey, published as part of the annual ‘FN50’ study of the UK’s 50 largest contract hire and leasing companies.

The German marque has continued its reign as the leasing industry’s most reliable van manufacturer and its Sprinter model retained its stronghold as the most dependable van, according to this year’s survey, compiled by trade publication Fleet News and revealed at the annual ‘FN50’ dinner in London.

Sprinter retained the Most Reliable Van award for the fourth consecutive year, and fifth year in total since 2011 (2011, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018).

To compile the awards, ‘FN50’ companies were asked to rank their vans in order of the best performing in terms of breakdowns and warranty claims and allocate points, which were then collated to create league tables.

Stephen Briers, editor-in-chief, Fleet News, explained: “The ‘FN50’ is responsible for funding more than 433,000 light commercial vehicles so the view of these major leasing companies about reliability is to be respected. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter tops the table for the fourth consecutive year, while Mercedes-Benz Vans has become the most reliable van maker, proving the overall quality of the brand. Reliability is crucial for fleets looking to maximise uptime; it’s clear that Mercedes-Benz continues to offer them the best proposition.”

Steve Bridge, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Vans UK, said: “We are so proud that our vehicles deliver the promise we make to our customers; we work hard to keep their businesses moving, so to be acknowledged as the most reliable manufacturer and have the most reliable van proves that we deliver on that promise.”

The closely-fought battle at the top of the manufacturers’ reliability table has seen Volkswagen and Ford swap places, taking second and third respectively. French stablemates Peugeot and Citroen rose up the rankings to take fourth and fifth spots respectively.

Volkswagen’s Transporter rose to second place in the most reliable van rankings with the Mercedes-Benz Vito in third place ahead of the Vauxhall Vivaro in fourth and the Citroën Berlingo completing the top five.
